Your garage door weighs as much as a small car. If the safety systems fail, it can crush a child, pet, or your own hand in less than a second. After 15 years on service calls across San Diego, I've seen homeowners overlook basic safety features that cost nothing to check and everything to ignore.
Modern garage doors have two independent safety mechanisms. The first is the auto-reverse feature, which stops the door and reverses it if something blocks its path during closing. The second is the photo eye (also called a safety sensor), which uses invisible infrared beams near the ground to detect motion and prevent the door from closing on anything in its way.
Both systems must work flawlessly. If either fails, your door becomes a serious hazard.
I tested a customer's photo eye last month in Pacific Beach. The beam looked fine from the outside, but dust had accumulated on the lens. The door wouldn't reverse when I held my hand in front of it. A five-minute cleaning solved it. Without that check, her kids could have been injured.
Photo eyes are simple devices, but they're exposed to weather. In San Diego's coastal areas, salt spray corrodes the lenses. Inland, dust and spider webs block the beam. Direct sunlight can also interfere with the sensor's ability to detect motion.
Test your photo eye right now. Close the garage door and hold your hand in front of the sensors (about 6 inches above the ground, between the two units on either side). The door should reverse immediately. If it doesn't, or if it hesitates, call a technician. This isn't something to guess about.
Check the lenses too. If they're cloudy or covered in debris, wipe them gently with a dry cloth. If cleaning doesn't restore function, the sensor itself may be failing and needs replacement.
The auto-reverse mechanism works two ways. First, the photo eye detects obstacles before the door hits them. Second, the bottom edge of the door has a pressure sensor that triggers reversal if the door actually makes contact with something.
This is where I see the most danger. Many homeowners test the auto-reverse by placing a wooden block under the closing door. The door hits the block and bounces back. Problem is, that test only works if the pressure sensor is working. And pressure sensors wear out.
A better test: close the door and gently place your hand on top of the door frame as it comes down. The door should reverse the instant it touches your hand. You shouldn't need to push it. If you have to apply pressure or if the door hesitates, the sensor is losing sensitivity.

Kids are naturally curious. They'll stick fingers, toys, and arms into the door's path. They'll hide under the door. They'll press the button repeatedly without understanding what they're doing.
